Egg Float Test: Is That “Fresh” Egg is Good Or Bad?

Not sure if that “fresh” egg is good or bad? Try the egg float test!

 

Why do you need to know about the egg float test? Chickens are masters at hiding their eggs if they want.

 

Every so often, I come across a nest of “fresh” eggs on the homestead – and I have no idea how long they’ve been there, and if they’re good or bad.

 

Chickens like to hide their eggs in dark, tight places.

 

Why?

 

It’s an evolutionary thing – eggs that are hidden are less likely to be snagged by a predator.

 

At the same time, if a chicken wants to hatch eggs, which requires sitting for long periods of time, a dark place is best – she’s more likely to be left alone.

 

But let’s say you come across a nest, and aren’t sure how old the eggs are, and whether you should just toss them.

 

Want to know how to tell if eggs are good? That’s where the egg float test comes in!

 

If you’ve never tried the egg float test, it’s a great and visually easy way to tell if eggs are fresh.

 

Also, if you have store-bought eggs in your fridge that are expired, it’s worth trying the egg float test to determine if they’re okay to use.

So, how do you perform the egg float test?

 

The egg float test is easy.

 

First, grab a cup of cool (not ice cold and definitely not hot) water.

 

If you want to try the egg float test using a mason jar, make it easy on yourself, and use a wide-mouthed jar so you can get the egg out easier.

 

A cup of water works well, too.

 

To complete the egg float test, just gently insert your egg into the water.

 

According to the egg float test, if your eggs rise to the top of the water, they’re too old to use.

 

But if they sink, they’re fresh and still good to eat.
Of course with anything there’s a catch.

 

What does the egg float test mean if your egg sort of floats, but sort of sinks?

 

If your egg suspends on one end, it’s technically still okay to eat, but you need to use it soon. 

 

Personally, I usually toss these eggs to my pigs, since there’s typically fresher eggs available.

 

I know the pigs appreciate them.

 

And remember…

 

Once you’ve put the egg in water, you’ve stripped off the bloom, which means air can get into the egg quicker. (Learn more about cleaning eggs here).

 

So, if the eggs sink, you’ll probably want to use them sooner rather than later. (Learn more about how long eggs stay fresh).

 

So, what’s the science behind the egg float test?

 

Good question.

 

Egg shells, as you might know, are porous, meaning they let air into them. (Learn more about the anatomy of an egg here).

 

So…

 

The fresher an egg is, the less air it has inside of it, so it sinks.

 

Old eggs, however, have more air in them because oxygen has had time to permeate the shell. So, they float.

 

Because of all this, the egg float test is considered an accurate way to test your whether those eggs you found are okay to eat, or if you should just toss them.

 

Other “Freshness” Tests: How to Tell if Eggs are Good

 

There are a couple other ways besides the egg float test to tell if the eggs you found are fresh.

 

One option is to candle the eggs, just as you would if you were to hatch them.

 

In this test, you’re looking to see how intact the yolk is (the more intact the more likely it’s fresh).

 

And, similar to the egg float test, you’re looking to see how much air is inside the egg (the more air space, the older the egg is).

 

Another test is to hold the egg up to your ear.
If you hear a lot of movement, the egg is said to be old, but if you don’t hear anything, then the egg is fresh.

 

Personally, I prefer the egg float test, and I have more experience with it.

What To Buy At The Farmer’s Market: December

Can you believe it’s almost winter? I am not ready for the nice fall weather to go away!

December can be a tricky month for shopping at the farmer’s market, depending on where you live. If you live somewhere that gets FREEZING cold in the winter, like I do, you’ll be lucky if you can even find a farmers market.

If you live in a state with mild winters (lucky you) then you’ll likely have a lot more options available in the winter months. So this month I decided to divide up the farmer’s market guide into colder winter states, and warmer winter states.

Our warmer winters states are places like Arizona, Southern California, Florida, and parts of Texas and Louisiana.

While our colder winter states should cover places with cold winters (but not crazy winters). If you’re in Alaska, you’re definitely going to have different options than Kentucky, so keep that in mind.

This is a very GENERAL guide. Just to show you what to keep an eye out for. If you want to know exactly what’s in season in your area, I suggest you use The Seasonal Food Guide.

You can put in where you live and it will tell you exactly what fruits and veggies are in season in your area.

But let’s get going! Here is your farmer’s market guide for December!

Colder Winter States

If you’re freezing cold all winter like me then this part of the list is for you!

Potatoes

Now you’re probably not going to find fresh potatoes in December. But many farmers (at least where I’m from) store potatoes in root cellars, so that they can sell them through the winter. So keep an eye out for some locally grown potatoes in December, so you can make mashed potatoes!

Sprouts

I love using sprouts in my meals. They’re perfect for adding on top of salads or putting on a sandwich!

Turnips

I’ve never been a huge fan of turnips, but this year I’m thinking I’ll have to try this yummy recipe for pan-roasted turnips!

Winter Squash

Winter squash stores well, so you’ll probably be able to find winter squash throughout the season. Which is perfect because winter squash is yummy and good for you!

Radishes

If you’re lucky you might still find some radishes in your area in December. I’m looking forward to trying this garlic roasted radishes recipe!

Sweet Potatoes

I didn’t realize how much I loved sweet potatoes until about a year ago. Now I love using sweet potatoes in my recipes! One of my favorite ways to use sweet potatoes is in soups like this sweet potato and sausage soup recipe!

Radicchio

Radicchio is a new one for me! I’ve never tried it! But I’m looking forward to trying this recipe for Radicchio Salad with Green Olives

Carrots

Carrots are definitely one of my favorite vegetables. I snack on them while I work! I love eating carrots with Homemade Ranch Dressing!

What to do in your garden in April

Broccoli

Broccoli is also a dinner staple for me. I love steaming broccoli for a simple side dish to go with my meals. You can also try this yummy Cream of Broccoli Soup Recipe!

Citrus

Obviously, this is not in season locally if you live in an area with cold winters. But I highly recommend trying to find citrus grown from an area near you at the grocery store.

Citrus starts coming into season in December which means that if you buy citrus grown in the U.S. at the grocery store it’s going to taste better this time of year!

Spinach

You may be able to find some spinach in your area in December. Especially if there’s local farmers that are using cold frames. I’m excited to try this bacon spinach salad this year using the bacon I get from Butcher Box.

Warmer Weather States

Now things are a little bit different for those of you who live in states with milder winters. I’m talking about you California, Florida, Texas, Hawaii, Louisiana, and Arizona. All the rest of us are jealous of your nice, mild winters.

There are probably going to be much different things available in your farmers markets than in the rest of the country.

Obviously this depends on where you live in the state as well (Northern California won’t have the same produce as Southern California).

Now there’s probably a lot more produce available than what I’m listing here, but these are some of the main items you’re going to find in the farmer’s markets starting in December if you live somewhere with a milder winter.

Citrus

I’m jealous of all y’all that have locally grown citrus at your farmers markets. Citrus is in season in December, so look for oranges, grapefruit, pomegranates, tangerines, clementines, and lemons.

Apples

Y’all know I love apples, and in milder winter states there are likely to still be some local apples around.

Carrots

Like I said before I love carrots! Look for fresh, locally grown carrots at your local farmer’s market and make some yummy Homemade Ranch Dressing!

Broccoli

The holidays are coming y’all and I am so excited for the food.

I LOVE all of the delicious food that shows up around Christmas and Thanksgiving. What To Buy At The Farmer’s Market This Month: Thanksgiving Edition

Can you believe that it’s almost November? I feel like this year has flown past!

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday and I am so excited for this year! I love to find seasonal foods at my local farmer’s market for Thanksgiving. Eating local food tastes sooo much better and that makes it perfect for Thanksgiving!

In my area it’s still 80 degrees (can you believe it? ugh) so the growing season is a little bit longer here. But I know for many of you, especially those of you who live further north, the farmer’s market pickings are getting slim in November.

Because of the variety of climates in the United States this is farmer’s market guide is pretty general. If you want to know exactly what’s in season in your area you can head over to The Seasonal Food Guide. I love this website because you can put in your zip code and know exactly what’s in season throughout the year in your area!

So let’s get started! Here’s what you should be looking for at the farmer’s market in November!

Apples

I’ve said it many times before, but I LOVE fresh apples. And fresh apples are perfect for making apple pie for Thanksgiving! In my opinion, there’s nothing better than homemade apple pie. You can check out my favorite homemade pie recipes here: Homemade Pie Recipes For The Holidays

You can also use fresh apples to make homemade apple cider vinegar! I have a guide for how to make apple cider vinegar here!

Mint

If you’re lucky you might be able to find some fresh mint at your local farmer’s market this month. It’s still in season in my area at the beginning of November, so keep an eye out for it! Having mint around during Thanksgiving is a must have for me because mint soothes upset tummies. I like to chew on the leaves, or I’ll make mint tea if I have an upset stomach (from eating too much!)

Plus mint has tons of benefits for your chickens! I use dried peppermint in my hens’ nesting boxes! You can get dried peppermint in my shop here: Dried peppermint 

Potatoes

If you’re lucky you might still be able to find some local potatoes for your Thanksgiving mashed potatoes. Since potatoes are fairly easy to store long term you can usually find farmers who have stored their crop from earlier in the season. When I lived further north I would go to a local farmer who stored potatoes in a massive root cellar! It was awesome because you could get local potatoes year round!

Sweet Potatoes

Yum! I love sweet potatoes! And good thing they’re in season in November, so you can make candied yams for Thanksgiving! This recipe for candied yams looks delicious (This recipe does call for sweet potatoes, not yams. Typically in the U.S. the words sweet potatoes and yams are used almost interchangeably which can be confusing!)

Winter Squash

I’m really looking forward to trying some recipes with winter squash this year! There are so many varieties of winter squash (spaghetti, acorn, butternut etc.) and I’m really looking forward to trying some out!

Mustard Greens

Thyme

I love fresh thyme! Typically November is the last month there’s fresh thyme at the farmer’s market, so I’m going to enjoy it while I can! Make Your Own Delicious Homemade Root Beer!

Today I’m going to share a quick homemade root beer recipe with you!

Making homemade root beer was one of my favorite things to do as a kid. Every Halloween my mom would make homemade root beer and I loved the cool fog that it created!

I love making my own homemade root beer! This recipe is fun for kids because the dry ice used in the root beer creates “fog” that is perfect for Halloween. Your kids will love the root beer and the fog that this recipe creates!

This recipe is fun for Halloween parties, barbecues, or just making it for your kids!

Disclaimer here: Obviously, you don’t want to let your kids handle or be anywhere near dry ice. Dry ice can be dangerous, so this recipe definitely requires adult supervision! Make sure you wear gloves and handle the dry ice safely. Also keep in mind that you should buy the dry ice right before you plan to use it because it can evaporate pretty quickly if you don’t store it correctly!

Here’s the ingredients you need:

  • Large container (I always use a large pitcher, or you could use a cauldron for a Halloween party!)
  • 4 quarts of water
  • 2 cups of sugar*
  • 2-3 Tablespoons of root beer extract**
  • 1-2 pounds of broken up dry ice***

First off, you want to make this root beer in a well-ventilated area. Also make sure you don’t put a lid on the container you’re making the root beer in! The pressure can build up and cause it to explode!

Mix the water, sugar, and root beer extract together in the container. Carefully add in your pieces of dry ice and stir. At this point the dry ice will start to dissolve and create “fog.” Stir the mixture frequently so that the dry ice doesn’t stick to the sides or bottoms of the container. Serve once all of the dry ice has dissolved!

Trust me, your kids will love the fog and the yummy root beer! It’s perfect for Halloween (or any time of the year!) I also love using this recipe for making root beer floats!

Recipe Notes:

*You can add extra sugar to the recipe if you want it to be sweeter. This recipe is easy to customize so add more sugar if your prefer your root beer to be sweet

**Same as with the sugar, you can add more root beer extract or less depending on your taste preference. Personally, I would start with two tablespoons and then slowly add more if you feel it needs it.

***The more dry ice you put in to this recipe, the longer it will bubble and create fog! But that also means that you will have to wait longer before you can drink it.

Homemade Root Beer

  • 4 quarts water
  • 2 cups sugar

Covering it can cause the pressure to build up inside of the container which can cause it to explode. Always handle dry ice safely by using thick gloves or tongs. Dry ice can burn your skin if you aren’t careful.

10 Simple & Healthy After School Snacks Your Kids Will Love

Can y’all believe it’s back to school season already? I can’t believe that kids are starting to go back to school and that fall is almost here!

One thing that I’ve always noticed especially as school gets started again is that it can be SO HARD to find healthy snacks to feed your kids. They always come home starving and honestly they normally want junk food! And whether you’re a working parent or a stay at home parent it can be stressful to try and think of healthy snacks your kids will actually like.

So let me help you out. Here’s my list of some of my favorite after school snacks that are simple and healthy!

Apples and Peanut Butter

This one is a classic. I’m a huge fan of apples dipped in peanut butter and you kids definitely will be too!  I prefer to use all natural peanut butter like the one below because it has only one ingredient! Peanuts! If your kids have peanut allergies you can try out sun butter! It’s made with sunflower seeds so it’s a great alternative if there are any nut allergies in your home!

 

Homemade Popsicles

I love homemade popsicles! They are SO GOOD! I love to make them with fresh or frozen fruit and yogurt. Two of my favorite recipes are these pineapple popsicles and these berry popsicles. They only take five minutes to make and they’re a great healthy snack for your kids!

Homemade Goldfish

Yummy! Who doesn’t love goldfish? Especially when they’re homemade with ingredients you can trust. Check out this recipe for some homemade goldfish right here! They’re a great snack and your kids will love helping you make them!

Veggies and Hummus

This is definitely one of my favorite snacks and it’s so easy to make! All you need to do is chop up some veggies and let your kids dip them in hummus. You can buy hummus here or you can make your own! Hummus is super simple to make (this recipe takes less than 5 minutes!) and your kids will love it!

Cucumber Cups

How fun are these cucumber cups! They’re super yummy and packed full of nutrients and the filling is made with eggs! This recipe is a great way to feed your kids a healthy snack and use up all of your extra eggs! Check out the recipe here!
