Ok, so gardening can be really hard for beginners.

The first year I started gardening I remember being so frustrated that my garden wasn’t producing like I wanted it to.  Gardening takes A LOT of work and patience and so it can be really frustrating for beginners when their garden isn’t doing exactly what they want it to.

That’s why I’ve decided to share a gardening tip with you every single month, so that your garden can be just a little bit healthier this year! I love it when there are simple tricks I can use that can make my garden more productive! I used these simple hacks and it helped my tomatoes to grow so much healthier last year!

And these simple hacks are something you can easily do at home! And I love that these hacks are cheap and DIY!

So let’s talk about the soil in your garden.

Your soil is obviously very important in helping your plants grow. But you have to do more than just digging a hole and plopping your plants down inside. My first time gardening ended in disaster because I didn’t do anything to my soil to help my plants grow correctly. I didn’t know that I needed to give my plants a little bit of a head start by adding nutrients to the soil, so they could be more productive.

Tomatoes are really popular plants especially for first time gardeners.

Because who doesn’t love fresh salsa? So my hacks today are going to focus specifically on growing tomatoes, but they’re useful for other plants too!

classic tomato sauce

My first tips is to use ground egg shells as a natural fertilizer for your tomatoes!  I love using egg shells in my soil because it’s natural, I have tons of them, and they’re a great fertilizer.

Egg shells are full of calcium which is great for plants, especially plants such as tomatoes and peppers! I also have TONS of egg shells because we have around 200 chickens right now. So this hack is awesome for me! I highly recommend this hack for all chicken owners because it’s a frugal way to add nutrients to  your soil!

What I do is grind up my egg shells leftover from my boiled eggs (which are my favorite by the way). I normally use a mortar and pestle like this one to grind up the shells. I grind the shells because grinding the shells up helps them to decompose faster than if you just put them in the soil as is.

It does take time for egg shells to decompose, so I recommend tilling your egg shells into your garden in the fall and then again in the spring! Adding egg shells to your tomato bed is a great way to give your tomatoes the nutrients in their soil that they need!

My next hack is a classic.

Try putting a banana peel in your soil to help your tomatoes grow! Ok, so I know this trick is pretty common for experienced gardeners, but I want to make sure all of you first time gardeners learn this hack because it’s awesome! This hack really is classic. I remember watching my grandpa carefully place banana peels in the bottom of each hole before he planted his tomatoes. And he always grew the best tomatoes, so it must work right?

Here’s what I do:

First off, I always buy organic bananas, especially if I’m planning on using the peels in my garden. I don’t use pesticides in my garden, so I don’t want to introduce any harmful chemicals into my garden that were on the banana peel. I would rather be safe than sorry! And at least in my area organic bananas are only a couple cents more than conventionally grown ones, so it’s worth the splurge when I’m planning on using them in my garden.

So after I eat my banana, I clean off the peel with water and baking soda. I love using baking soda to clean off my vegetables because I feel like due to the grittiness of baking soda it gets off anything from the peel that is potentially harmful. Again, I would rather be safe than sorry!

Next dig your hole for your tomato plant. After you finish digging your hole simply place your banana peel in the bottom of the hole and then plant your tomato on top of it! It’s so simple, but the nutrients from the banana peel will help your tomato to grow better!

After using this simple hack all you need to do is sit back and relax and enjoy the yummy homemade salsa made from your delicious tomatoes.

So summer is coming up and I am ready for barbecuing! Bring on the BBQ!

Barbecue sauce is one of my favorite things! I’ll eat BBQ sauce on anything! And there is absolutely nothing better than homemade BBQ sauce. It is seriously the best!

Our grill gets A LOT of use during the summer because I love grilling. My favorite foods are hamburgers, grilled chicken, and grilled salmon, so clearly our grill gets used pretty frequently all summer long. Personally, I don’t think there’s anything better than eating a delicious barbecued meal on a summer evening with family and friends.

Over the years I’ve found some pretty amazing BBQ sauce recipes that will blow you away! I love making homemade barbecue sauce because it tastes ten times better than buying it from the store. Check out these AMAZING homemade barbecue sauce recipes that will be a hit at your next summer party!

Homemade Sweet Baby Ray’s Barbecue Sauce

So Sweet Baby Ray’s BBQ sauce is really good. But I prefer to make my own sauces so I know exactly what is going into my food. So I LOVE this amazing homemade BBQ sauce recipe that tastes EXACTLY like Sweet Baby Ray’s BBQ sauce. Plus it only takes 10 minutes to make. Seriously I would just eat this sauce plain it’s so good!

3 Ingredient Barbecue Sauce

Ok, so sometimes my cupboards get a little bit bare. I just HATE going grocery shopping. Plus we live on a homestead so a trip to the grocery store isn’t quite as easy as driving down the street to the local grocery store. So this 3 ingredient barbecue sauce is the perfect solution for when you are out of BBQ sauce and need some BBQ chicken wings. I’ll admit that this situation has happened to me more than a couple of times and this recipe always comes in handy.

Asian Style BBQ Sauce

I’ll admit it, I’m licking my chops just thinking about this recipe. It’s THAT good. This recipe is a sure hit for the family too. It has just the right balance of tangy and sweet and it makes a perfect sauce for your next summer barbecue.

Spicy Smoky Barbecue Sauce

So I’m normally not a spicy food person. My husband is, but not me. I like to think of my taste buds as delicate (but I’m really just a wimp with spicy foods). But I’ll eat this spicy smoky barbecue sauce on anything. This sauce is perfect for dipping your fried chicken in, or just eating it plain. I’m not judging. I would do it too.

Authentic Cajun BBQ Sauce

So this barbecue sauce tastes like you just stepped into the bayou. It’s SO good. And it’s sugar free which is even better! I also love this Louisiana Cajun Style Baby Back Ribs recipe that goes great with this BBQ sauce.

Carolina BBQ Gold Sauce

So a golden BBQ sauce is a must have for every summer BBQ. I love that this recipe has the perfect sweet taste. This stuff is seriously SOOO good. And it goes perfectly with chicken nuggets. Just saying.

Hawaiian BBQ Sauce

So this recipe is PERFECT for a chicken sandwich. I could eat a pulled chicken sandwich with this stuff EVERY DAY. It’s so good. It has a nice fruity flavor because it has pineapple and oranges in it, and I love that this recipe has the perfect sweet taste.

Smoky Chipotle BBQ Sauce

This stuff is so good on burgers. Seriously. The only disadvantage of this recipe is if you made it your friends and family will make you bring it to every summer party. It’s that good.

Dr Pepper BBQ Sauce

So I’ll admit I was a little bit hesitant when are first saw this recipe for Dr Pepper BBQ sauce. I thought there was no way that it could be good (I’m a Coke fan myself) But you’ve got to give this recipe a try. It’s sweet and delicious. Plus it’s a nice change from a traditional BBQ sauce recipe.

Homemade Honey Barbecue Sauce

So sometimes I just need some classic, sweet, honey BBQ sauce. It brings me back to barbecues at my grandma’s house as a kid. And this recipe is perfect! It’s easy to make and it tastes pretty great with some chicken nuggets. Your kids will eat this up!

I hope you enjoyed these homemade BBQ sauce recipes. I’m ready to go pull out my grill and try them all. Do you have a homemade BBQ sauce recipe that’s to die for? I’d love to hear about it (and try it out!) Let’s talk about barbecue sauce in the comments below!

Recipes from Amish kitchens, passed down through generations, tend to combine simple ingredients into something simply delicious. Amish Farmhouse Sugar Cookies are a crunchy, melt-in-your-mouth treat made with just a few pantry staples.

Bake some to share and some to fill your own cookie jar!

Hi! I’m Wendy, the sprinkle loving, care package creating, baker at The Monday Box. My specialty is care package recipes for baked goods that travel well and stay fresh for a long time.

Of course, my recipes are just as delicious enjoyed at home!

I am excited to share some of my recipes here with you in a series of guest posts linking children’s picture books and baking!

When I started The Monday Box, 7 years ago, my son had just started college. I wanted to send him a care package filled with home baked love.

Honestly, he would have been just as delighted with commercial cookies, but baking and sharing was therapeutic for me. I benefited while creating, and my son benefited while munching.

However, I couldn’t find a resource for care package recipes. Most baking recipes don’t tell you how long a cookie or bar will stay fresh.

I decided to publish my own care package recipe resource and created The Monday Box.

At first, I published recipes with only college care packages in mind, but over the years my care package focus has expanded to include a variety of purposes.

As an enthusiastic member of Soldiers Angels Deployed Adoptions team, I send monthly themed military care packages, with baked goodies that match the theme, to my “adopted” service members. I document those care packages and share the recipes on The Monday Box.

This guest post series will focus on another care package connection, baking for children. Whether you are baking for your own children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, or friends, these book themed treats are sure to cause lots of smiles.

In each of my Read-and-Bake posts, I will:

  • Feature a children’s picture book to read with your little ones.
  • Summarize the book.
  • Provide a recipe for a baked treat that ties to the book.
  • Offer tips for sharing, mailing, and enjoying the books and baked goods.

This month’s featured book is “The Cow Loves Cookies” by Karma Wilson. Told in rhyme, the story follows the farmer as he feeds his many animals.

All of the animals eat normal farm animal food, except for the cow who loves cookies! The cow has a deal worked out with the farmer. The farmer provides the cookies, and the cow provides the milk!

The author doesn’t tell us specifically what kind of cookie the cow loves. (I think she probably loves all cookies.) Amish Farmhouse Sugar Cookies would definitely be a good choice.

The illustrations show the Farmer and the cow eating a speckled cookie. I thought about what the speckles could be and chose to make my cookies speckled with raisins.

Other options for speckles that would be delicious in Amish Farmhouse Sugar Cookies include:

  • Chocolate chips (milk, white, dark, or semi-sweet)
  • Butterscotch chips
  • Peanut Butter chips
  • Cranberries
  • Dried cherries or other dried fruit bits
  • Nuts

My suggestion is that you read this book to the wee ones in your life, then share some milk and cookies. Reading snuggled up together is optimal, but if distance makes that impossible, send a care package filled with Amish Farmhouse Sugar Cookies and have a story time video chat!

Does your family have a favorite picture book? Is there a book you would like to see featured? Let me know in the comments!

So you want to have your kids make a cute craft for your mom for Mother’s Day. But you’re scared of the stress and the associated mess that comes from doing crafts with your kids. Yikes.

I totally understand. That’s why  I created this list of crafts your kids can make that are easy and (hopefully) mess free. But can anything with kids really be mess free? I’m not really sure. So here are some of my favorite “mess free” crafts that your kids can make for Mother’s Day.

Teacup Planter

Ok, so this idea is the cutest! I love the idea of using a teacup as an alternative to using a classic pot. This project would be simple and inexpensive. All you would need to do is head out to your local thrift store with you kids and let them choose out a teacup. Then let them choose a simple flower (i.e geranium, herbs, etc) to plant in the teacup. Check out this blog post here for more detailed instructions for this project!

Also check out this website that has more info on how to drill a hole in the bottom of your teacup to ensure proper drainage!

DIY Garden Markers

I love these simple garden markers! You could have your kids paint each of the spoons and then if they’re old enough have them draw each of the different vegetables.

Or if you’re going for an even simpler idea try these garden markers made with popsicle sticks. These markers are so easy, but super cute and fun!

And if you just want to avoid paint altogether (I know, it’s messy) you could make garden markers from rocks! Just head out to the backyard, pick out some rocks that are (fairly) flat on one side and have your kids write plant names on the rocks using a white paint marker. This is as easy as it gets folks and it looks really cute! There are some pictures here of some rock garden markers to give you ideas.

Printable Mother’s Day Book

This next idea is adorable. And it’s easy. Which is the best combination. It’s a printable Mother’s Day book! All you have to do is download the free pdf, print it off and have your kids fill in the blanks and draw pictures in the book. Here’s the link with more detailed instructions and the pdf (https://www.hellowonderful.co/post/KID-MADE-FREE-PRINTABLE-MOTHER—-S-DAY-BOOK/)

Garden Stepping Stones

I love garden stepping stones. I think they are so fun and add a nice touch to any garden. So these simple garden stones you can make with your kids are perfect! You just need quick dry cement, glass stones from the dollar store, and cereal boxes. You use the cereal boxes as the mold for the cement and then have your kids decorate each of the stones. Check out the full tutorial here  Disclaimer: I recommend you don’t let your kids pour the cement into the mold…that’s just asking for trouble and a huge mess.

Pressed Flower Bookmark

I love this cute pressed flower bookmark. It’s a great excuse to go out in nature and explore with your kids and it’s an easy craft for a Mother’s Day gift.

Mommy/Grandma Survival Kit

This  DIY Mommy/Grandma Survival Kit is an easy and fun gift for your kids to make. It’s just a mason jar filled with fun things any mom or grandma would need. You could let your kids choose what they want to fill the jar with and then have them decorate the jar how they want to.

Handmade You Are My Sunshine Card

Handmade cards are the best. Kids say the funniest things and I always get a laugh anytime my kids write me a card. This handmade card just requires some googly eyes, cardstock, and a cupcake liner.

String Heart Mother’s Day card

So I think Mother’s Day cards are the best. So here’s another one. This String Heart Mother’s Day card is simple and mess free!

DIY Flower Pens

Ok, so this one is a classic. So take advantage of how easy this gift is! All you need are some fake flowers, floral tape, and a pen. Basically all you need to do is glue the fake flower to the pen and then wrap the pen with floral tape! Check out this tutorial for more detailed instructions.

“Shhh Mommy’s Sleeping” door hanger

And last but not least a “Shhh Mommy’s Sleeping” door hanger. I need this. I’m probably going to have my kids make this for me tomorrow because it’s awesome. This door hanger is a super easy craft your kids can make to remind them not to disturb mom while she’s taking a nap. You’re welcome ladies.

So I used to work for a farm stand that sold local produce. And I can’t tell you how many times people would come and ask if we had local corn. In JANUARY! There was snow on the ground outside and people wanted local corn!

I grew up gardening so I understood what vegetables were in season in my area at what time, but I’ve come to understand that a lot of people just don’t know what types of produce are in season.

Everyone is used to being able to go to the grocery store and buy whatever they want in whatever season they want. And many people don’t understand that this produce is shipped in from other areas.

I highly recommend eating locally grown fruits and vegetables whenever possible. Not only does it taste better, but many times if you’re buying produce at your local farmers market you can interact with the farmer who grows your food!

This is amazing because you can learn more about their growing practices and you know exactly where and how your food was grown.

One thing I’ve learned is that many farmers (at least in my area) use minimal to no pesticides on their crops, but they aren’t certified organic because the certification process is long and expensive. So if eating produce that hasn’t been sprayed with pesticides is important to you talk to your local farmers and see how they grow their crops!

I also just love being able to talk to the people who grow my food! It’s fun and you come to appreciate all of the hard work that goes into growing produce.

One of my favorite tools to use is the Seasonal Food Guide. You can put in your location and it will tell you exactly what foods are in season in your area based on the month! This is an amazing tool and it allows you to see exactly what foods you should be looking for at your local farmers market.

Now I know that not everyone lives in an area where there is delicious produce all year round. Eating a variety of fruits and vegetables is important so sometimes you do have to eat food that isn’t grown locally, especially if you live in an area with long winters and a short growing season.

But even if there isn’t locally grown food available it’s important to choose food that is in season where it is being grown in order to get the best taste!

Keep in mind that this is a guide for what foods are in season here in the U.S. and it could be different depending on where you live! If you live in California you’re in luck because there are tons of foods in season all year round. However, if you live somewhere that has long, cold winters (Like me!) there aren’t as many options. I always recommend heading to your local farmers market first to check out what’s growing in your area or using the seasonal food guide to see what’s in season locally.

So here are 5 foods that are in season in May!

Asparagus

So growing up my mom never cooked asparagus because she didn’t like it so I didn’t learn about how amazing asparagus is until I got to college! I decided to try it out one day and I loved it! I love this garlic butter sauteed asparagus recipe!

Snap Peas

So late in May to early June start looking for snap peas. Peas are my favorite! They are an easy snack and they’re delicious. I love creamy peas and potatoes and it’s even better when you have fresh local peas. Check out my favorite creamy peas and potatoes recipe here

Radishes

Radishes are just beginning to come in season in May. I was never a big fan of radishes, but then I tried this amazing crispy roasted garlic radishes recipe and I’m hooked.

Chives

So chives are the best! They add an amazing flavor to any recipe and they’re in season in May! Check out these amazing Cheddar and Chive biscuits!

Spinach

I LOVE spinach! I’m so glad it’s in season in May! I love spinach salads like this cranberry almond spinach salad!

Do you try and eat seasonally and choose food that is locally grown? Let me know of any tips you have for eating local produce in the comments!
